Abstract
Insect-based foods, such as Tenebrio molitor larvae, have gained attention owing to their potential health benefits. This study compared the yield and protein content of T. molitor larvae extract (TMLE) obtained at 5 and 75¡ÆC. The extract obtained at 5¡ÆC had superior quality and was adopted for further analysis. The immunomodulatory activity of TMLE (5¡ÆC) on macrophages, including macrophage viability (RAW264.7 cells), cytokine concentration, and cell-surface-marker expression, was evaluated. The TMLE (5¡ÆC) induced an immune response in macrophages through the mitogen-activated protein kinase and nuclear factor-¥êB transcription pathways, suggesting that TMLE (5¡ÆC) is a potential immune enhancer. No studies have reported the evaluation of immune activity with refrigerated extracts, making the findings of this study an important contribution to the field. They will have important implications in the development of novel immune-enhancing therapeutics.
